Day 2     Falster - Lolland - Maribo
Accommodation: Maribo Sopark Hotel
Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive towards Falster and Lolland via the highway. Arrival in Maribo which is situated by three deep lakes and beautifully framed by an undulating landscape. It is no wonder that when the Swedish monks in 1416 were choosing a site for the Bridgettine Order's new Danish cloister, decided upon this particular area. Maribo was built up around the Bridgettine Cloister, which in its time housed a complement of 60 nuns and 25 monks, though each in their own respective wings naturally. Two years later, the pope confirmed that the town could be called Mariebo after the Holy Virgin Mary. However, the most visible trace of its former greatness lies in the cloister church from 1470, which from 1803 became Maribo Cathedral. Inside the church, you can see Leonora Christina’s grave. She was the beloved daughter of King Christian IV, the renowned Danish King and Denmark’s greatest builder and became well-known for the descriptions of her long and involuntary imprisonment in the Blåtårn in Copenhagen, as she was being punished for her rebellion against King Frederik III and his wife. She therefore spent her final years in the monastery, south of the church.

Accommodation at Hotel Maribo Søpark, or similar

Day 4     Maribo
Accommodation: Maribo Sopark Hotel
Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive North towards Bogø and Møn to experience the breathtaking views from Møns Cliff which is one of Denmark's most beautiful nature experiences and also the most famous and visited place on Møn. The light chalk slope rises more than 100 meters vertically towards the sky and makes a dramatic end to the otherwise soft landscape of Møn. Walking around on Møns Cliff means walking around on 70 million years of history. As a spectator you may catch a glimpse of the ancient world if you’re lucky enough to find some of the beautiful fossils at the foot of the cliff. Møns Cliff was formed during the last ice age, where large ice tongues uncovered a layer of chalk, formed by the sea that covered Denmark, millions of years ago. The amazing and impressive landscape at Møn’s Cliff is characterized by a hilly terrain and is forever changing due to the disintegration of the sea. On the Cliff you find the 128 m high “Dronningestolen” (the queen’s chair) – the highest point of Møn’s Cliff and on a clear day you can see across the Baltic Sea to Sweden and Germany. At the foot of the Cliff lies the sea – in amazing blue and green shades – forming a contrast to the white chalk and the light green beeches. When at Møns Cliff, we recommend a visit to GeoCenter Møn (entrance not included) where the exhibition has been structured around a time travel of 70 million years' duration. Here high-technological exhibition techniques, free artistic interpretations and rare fossils will take you from the bottom of the Chalk Ocean and directly up to the unique nature to be found on the present-day Møns Cliff. After your visit, we recommend a small detour to the Crocodile Zoo in Eskildstrup (opens in June - entrance not included) where you will find the only collection in the world with all 23 existing crocodile species. Here you will see tortoises, monitors and snakes. The crocodile might very well be the toughest survivor ever thanks to its amazing adaptability to extreme environmental circumstances. Experience at close range the diversity of incredible species, from the small 1.5 m. Cuvier's dwarf caiman (that we are the first to breed in Denmark) to the very special Gharial with its long and thin snout as well as both adults and young individuals from a whole range of species.
