Denmark looks after its old gardens and they have an identifiable Danish character. Even when baroque in inspiration, Danish gardens have a quiet simplicity and dignity. With a rental car you will able to visit and enjoy some of Denmark's most beautiful gardens!

Day 2     Copenhagen

Breakfast at the hotel. Copenhagen is full of attractions, most of them located within walking distance. We warmly recommend a visit to the following parks:

* Botanical Garden (FOC) is a living museum and room for the largest collection of living plants in Denmark. * The Kings Garden (FOC) is the garden attached to the Rosenborg Castle and is the oldest royal garden in Denmark. The garden is very popular to the Danes and is commonly used for walks and relaxing in the summertime. * Landbohøjskolen Garden (also known as Frederiksberg Campus, the University Garden – FOC) is providing material for teaching and research (whole plants, plant material, seed, insects, pests and benificial animals, plant ailments etc. ) and is also used as field studies in teaching. * Det Kongelige Danske Haveselskab (FOC) is an inspiration to maintain the garden culture and garden art. * Tivoli Gardens (entrance included) the famous amusement park located in the heart of the city has a large variety of venues, amusements and lovely flowers. The Tivoli Gardens are for all ages. Take a stroll through the beautiful garden and enjoy a nice dinner in one of the Tivoli Gardens’ many restaurants

Day 3     Copenhagen - Sealand

COPENHAGEN – NORTH SEALAND – COPENHAGEN

Breakfast at the hotel. Today drive north to visit the Forstbotanisk Have (FOC) in Charlottenlund which is a peacefull oasis with more than 600 different species of trees and bushes. Continue to Hørsholm to visit the Arboretet (FOC) which is an extension of the garden in Charlottenlund. The Aboretet is, with its 2000 species of trees and bushes, the biggest collection in Denmark. It is used for studies in Denmark as well as international. Continue to Hillerød, where a visit is paid to Frederiksborg Castle, - one of the beautiful Renaissance building which - like so many others - was built by orders of King Christian IV. Today, Frederiksborg Castle is the home of the Museum of National History, the collection includes priceless paintings, silver and porcelain items, furniture and tapestries. The castle is surrounded by the Castle Lake, a Baroque garden and a romantic landscaped garden where the Queen’s monogram is shaped by close-cut hedges. On your way back to Copenhagen, take a detour to Fredensborg Castle for a brief photographic stop. Fredensborg Castle, built in 1722, is the Spring and Autumn residence of the Danish Queen. If you are visiting in July you may also take a stroll through the park, but please note that the park is closed the rest of the summer for visitors when the Queen is in residence. Return to Copenhagen.

Day 4     Hasle - Naestved - Odense

COPENHAGEN – HASLEV – NÆSTVED – ODENSE

Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning visit to Gisselfeld (near Haslev. Entrance included), one of Denmarks best preserved Renaissance castles, built in 1547. A 110 acre park was planned by the end of the 1800 by the famous English landscape architect, Milner. The estate’s greenhouses are full of exotic and rare pantes e.g. banana palms, orangetrees, figtrees, coffeeplants, insect eating plants, orchids and many more. Short drive to Næstved. Visit to Gavnø (entrance included). The castle was bought by Queen Margrethe in 1398, and is one of Denmark’s finest rococo castles. Visitors will find a great many things of interest irrespective of the season, e.g. the 15th century chapel, and the large private-owned picture collection. The park of Gavnø Castle has been referred to as the most beautiful garden in Denmark, and is maybe at its loveliest in the months of May/June, when thousands of tulips, narcissi, hyacinths, crocuses, and other bulbous plants are in flower. The flower beds have been laid out with due regard to the views through the park. Continue from Næstved to Halskov from where you will drive over one of the world’s largest suspension bridges constructed off-shore and arrive on the island of Funen. Continue to Odense, Denmark’s third largest city and Hans Christian Andersen’s home town for overnight stay.

Day 5     Odense

Breakfast at the hotel. Today relax in the cosy city of Odense. Take a stroll in the famous danish writer H. C. Andersons’ Garden (Fairytale Garden- FOC) The Garden was founded in 1876 and was at that time only for rich people. Today it has been modernised and is open for the public. The park it situated closed by the H. C. Anderson Museum and his childhood home – wich are also worth a visit (entrance not included). The park is also neighboring a beautiful Cloister Garden (FOC) with many beds of ancient medical plants.

Day 6     Funen - Gudme
Accommodation: Broholm Castle
Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel. Start the day driving west ward towards Aarup. Visit Erholm Manor House (FOC) with its 9 acre park, founded in 1840-50 by the Royal Garden Inspector Rudolf Rothe. Kurved lawns and paths takes you arround the many old and rare trees, beautiful lakes and cannels, which all together makes at a beautiful and romantic garden. Afterwards drive to Kværndrup and Egeskov Castle (entrance incl.), which is the best preserved moat castle in the world, with its rounded towers, double gables, red brick walls, green torrents and spire, built on a foundation of oak piles rammed into a bed of a lake more than 450 years ago. Today it is a family owned castle which has belonged to the family Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille since 1784. Visit the Great Hall which dates back to 1554 and contains furniture and paintings as well as seven adjoining rooms. Enjoy the 40 acres park with hundreds of aromatic plants and herbs and visit the old-timers Museum. Continue to Gudme for afternoon tea/coffee and cake served at Broholm Castle.

Day 7     Gudme - Copenhagen

Breakfast at the castle. Today return to Copenhagen via the Great Belt Bridge from Knudshoved to Halskov. You may take a detour to Kalundborg for a last visit to a Garden. The Garden of Lerchenborg is one of the best preserved baroque gardens dating back to the 1745-47.
