Denmark & Sweden Bike Tour

190 Miles on 8-Speed All Terrain Bikes

8 Days / 6 locations in Denmark and Sweden

The perfect way to visit two Scandinavian countries in 8 days!

The tour starts in Copenhagen, Denmark. The route heads inland towards Hillerød and then further on to Helsingør, the port town to Sweden. After three nights on the Danish side you go across the Oresound to Sweden. Then follow three days of quiet Swedish landscape before going across the Øresound again. The last night is spent back in Copenhagen.

The Danish side offers mostly cultural and historic sights whereas the main Swedish attractions are natures beauty and, of course, the university town Lund.

The tour is recommended to somewhat experienced bikers only, not that the mileage is very much, but the Swedish country roads have a lot of gravel and can be quite desolate. Participants must be able to fix a flat tire and necessary bike repairs.

Itinerary

Day 1     Copenhagen

Arrival in Copenhagen. There are two choices for accommodation. The inner city or a quiet suburb, Gentofte, 8 kilometres from Copenhagen. Spend the day sightseeing in Copenhagen. Enjoy a boat trip on the canals, a stroll on the pedestrian street Strøget or explore the side streets of the medieval part of town.

Day 2     Copenhagen - Hillerod
Meals: Breakfast

30 miles

Leaving the City on bicycle paths the route heads north. First it goes through Dyrehaven, the royal hunting ground. If you are lucky and quiet you will see the impressing flocks of deer. The route turns inland and goes through a typical Glacial-Period landscape, with woods, small hills and lakes. The night is spent in Hillerød. The Frederiksborg Castle located in the middle of a lake is well-worth a visit.

Day 3     Hillerod - Helsingor
Meals: Breakfast

20 miles

On to Fredensborg, another town with a palace. The Danish Queen spends half the year at Fredensborg Palace. The grounds are always open. In July, the palace and private garden are also open to the public. The night is spent in Helsingør. Here you will find the castle Kronborg. Shakespeare's Hamlet is said to have lived here. Helsingør is a very lively town, with ferries going across the Øresund all the time, busy shoppers in the narrow old cobbled street and many nice cafes and restaurants.

Day 4     Helsingor - Soderasen
Meals: Breakfast

34 miles

Go across the Oresund by ferry, it takes 20 minutes. After leaving Helsingborg, the town on the Swedish side, the countryside will be peaceful and ever changing. At Söderåsen, visit Sweden's newest national park and enjoy the rough and hilly landscape formed by the ice, back in the Glacial-Period. Spend the night at a traditional country inn. In Sweden not all country roads have hard surface, be prepared for gravel stages.

Day 5     Soderasen - Lund
Meals: Breakfast

35 miles

The route now heads south towards the university town of Lund, passing several manor houses and castles. In Lund the hotel is centrally located giving excellent possibilities for touring the town by bicycle or foot. The most famous attractions in Lund are the cathedral and the open-air museum Kulturen.

Day 6     Lund - Helsingborg
Meals: Breakfast

35 miles

On quiet country roads to Landskrona at the Oresund coast. Time for a rest, either at the beaches in the cosy small village Borstahusen, north of Landskrona. Or maybe visit the Citadel Castle, the impressive fortification from 1549. Follow the coastline into Helsingborg. The night is spent in Helsingborg, just next to the harbor with the ferries going back and forth to Denmark all the time.

Day 7     Helsingor - Copenhagen
Meals: Breakfast

30 miles

Go across the Oresund once again, leave Helsingør and head south along the coastal road to Louisiana, a museum of modern art enjoying world acclaim for its exhibitions is definitely a must. Its location by the sea makes it an excellent place for a lunch stop and a swim. At Rungsted you can visit the home of the Danish author, Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) - famous among other things for her novel on Africa which later was filmed and called "Out of Africa". The harbors along the coast are excellent places to stop and have a meal or drink coffee. Go all the way into Copenhagen on bike paths.
