Staffa, Scotland

Staffa is an uninhabited Island which gave Felix Mendelsson the inspiration for his famous Hebrides Overture. The island is home to Fingals Cave, a large and impressive cave in the South of the island.

The geology of the island is interesting and consists largely of balsatic columns in hexagonal formation similar to the Giant's Causeway. The Island was inhabited until about 200 years ago. Today it is home to many sea birds, the most famous and popular being the puffin. Puffins can be seen there only during the nesting and breeding season i.e. late April to August.

Trips to Staffa can be undertaken from Iona, Fionnphort and from Ulva Ferry. They are subject to weather conditions and advanced booking is recommended.
