Cagliari, Italy

Cagliari is the largest town on the island of Sardinia and has been its capital since Roman times. For many travelers it is their arrival point in Sardinia - there are ferry services to Naples, Sicily, Civitavecchia and other towns.

The old city centre is protected by a set of Pisan fortifications and it can be explored on foot easily. The Bastione San Remy on the Piazza Costituzione is a great bastion which gives you access to the old city and from where you have a great view over the harbour. The 13th century Cathedral on Piazza Palazzo has old towers such as the Torre San Pancrazio and the Torre dell'Elefante which form part of the defensive structures of the city.

Outside of the old city centre the main sight is the San Saturnino Church. This is the oldest Christian church on the island dating from the 5th century. It's on the Via Dante.
