Unesco Heritage Explorer

8 Days / 2 locations in Iceland and Greenland

This tour celebrates the UNESCO sites of Iceland and South Greenland. Start in Iceland with included visits to Krysuvik, Blue Lagoon (both in Reykjanes Unesco Geopark) and the Golden Circle area including the World Heritage site of Thingvellir. In Greenland, explore UNESCO World Heritage gems such as Qassiasuk and Igaliko where you will find remains from the area's proud Viking settlements.

Iceland's Golden Circle combined with historic South Greenland with fertile fjords, the Inland Ice Cap and icebergs.

Reykjavik (Iceland)

A true blend of past and present. You will find all facilities of a metropolis as well as the warm friendliness of a small town.

This programme suits clients who do not want to change accommodation every day and those who like to have several options of evening restaurants and city facilities within close range.

Reykjavik is the ideal base for excursions to the most famous highlights of South Iceland:

The Blue Lagoon.

The majestic waterfall Gullfoss.

The Geysir area with erupting hot springs.

The National Park of Thingvellir; a historic site through centuries and a masterpiece of nature with a scenic lake and rifts which mark where the continental plates of Europe and America meet.

Narsarsuaq (Greenland)

Narsarsuaq is the gateway to South Greenland. Meaning ‘great plain’ in Greenlandic. Today the site serves as a small international airport and a small settlement, largely preoccupied working for the local tourism industry.

The area is offering a huge diversity of experiences from iceberg cruises to easy hikes in a nearby valley and a full-day trek to the Inland Ice Cap.

The area around Narsarsuaq is also Viking Country and there are numerous ancient remains from these first Europeans on the American continent. Erik the Red was the Viking who settled in Greenland and gave the huge island its name. Remains of his farm Brattahild can be found across Erik’s Fjord from Narsarsuaq, which is also the site of the first Christian church built on the North American continent. Other evidence of Viking settlements are easily accessible in the area, e.g. the ruins of the Viking Cathedral and Bishop’s Farm in the nearby village of Igaliku.

No visit to Greenland is complete without seeing a glacier up close, and in Narsarsuaq you can do just that in two different ways; by foot or (if you prefer to relax) by boat. Cruise among the icebergs to the fjord of Qooroq where the glacier of the same name is found. We go as close as we safely can and enjoy sights and sounds of the ‘newborn’ icebergs.

For a real Arctic adventure – join us for a full day hike to a melting glacier in the area behind Narsarsuaq. There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the local flora and fauna, do a bit of mountaineering and as a reward – see and touch the glacier, directly connected to the Inland Ice Cap.
