Arrive Alta – the City of the Northern Lights!

Meet with your pre-booked taxi at the airport and transfer to your hotel, your driver will meet in the arrival hall with a sign!

Alta is a great choice for visitors seeking to experience the magic of the Northern Lights. As since year 2000 it has been named the city of the Northern Lights. The stable climate with many days of clear sky and in general very good weather conditions are reasons why several

international scientific expeditions carried out in Alta. In 1899 Kristian Birkeland bulit the world's first Northern Lights observatory in the top of Mt. Haldde. Visitors have always been delighted by the Northern Lights, which are also called the Aurora Borealis, and there are many myths associated with them. When visiting Alta you can learn more about what the Northern Lights actually are and the best way of seeing them, and obviously more about the myths and stories associated with them.

7.00pm 11.30pm Hunting the Northern Lights tour

The tour will take you in the direction where it’s most likely to catch the Northern Lights, and along the way you can experience the everchanging landscape of the Arctic from the wind and silence on the Finnmark Plateau to the sea breeze of the fjord. You and the Northern Lights are the focus during the tour – and our guide is open to any questions you might have along the way. As well as knowledge about the Northern Lights our guides knows the local history and can tell you stories about the culture and history of Alta. As a plus the guide has basic photo knowledge and all pictures taken during the tour will be sent for you after the tour is finished.

Please note! Due to weather and northern light forecast we reserve the rights to cancel or move the tour to next day.

Overnight and breakfast at the Thon Hotel Alta.

After breakfast departure to Dog Sledding Along the Alta River.

At 10.00am a guide will pick up you and drive to the farm. If needed, you will get warm clothing to match the winter weather, and then you will be taken to meet your guides and dog team.

After proper instruction for handling the sled, it's time to head out for a ride! Your ride will take you into the forest outside of Alta and along the bank of the frozen Alta River. Whether you are riding in the morning or in the dim arctic afternoon twilight, you'll be delighted by your natural surroundings and the silent, steady pace of your sturdy and dependable dogs. If you're lucky, you might even catch sight of a moose or other wildlife along the way! When you return to the farm, you will head indoors to our Lavvo (a traditional Sami tent) where you'll warm up around a fire with a hot drink. One of crew will answer questions and talk about racing dogs and life on the husky farm. And of course, there will be some extra time to visit and take pictures of your new four-legged friends, before returning to Alta again.

12.30pm Transfer back to Alta.

Free time at the city.

3.15pm Transfer to Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. Upon the arrival check in at the Igloo Hotel and enjoy the surroundings, walk inside of the hotel and around, take photos of ice sculptures. Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel is the world's northernmost ice hotel and is approximately 2500 sqm

large. All exterior and interior is made of snow and ice, even the glasses in the bar! The hotel has approximately 30 rooms including double rooms, single rooms, twin rooms and family rooms as well as suites which are uniquely decorated. Inside the hotel you’ll also find a main gallery, an ice chapel and an ice bar. The hotel is decorated with ice sculptures and snow decorations on the vast snow walls. The decoration and the pure white snow create a magical atmosphere inside. The main wooden building in Sorrisniva contains a large restaurant, locker rooms, toilets, shower, sauna, lounge with fireplace, luggage room and reception.

6.00pm A 3-course dinner based on local ingredients, cultivated, gathered and harvested in the region. The dinner will be served in a tranquil atmosphere were all elements plays together.

8.00pm Meet the guide and departure for traditional hunting for the northern lights.

11.30pm Returning to the Igloo Hotel. Overnight, morning sauna & breakfast at ice hotel.

Notes: Guests are asked to leave their luggage in the secure luggage room of your hotel in Alta. A small overnight bag is all you will need with your essentials. This should include thermal underwear, pullover, a warm comfortable hat to sleep in, warm socks and toiletries. The Igloo Hotel will provide you with warm sleeping bags and sheets, as well as additional clothing if necessary.

REINDEERS & SAMI EXPERIENCE

After breakfast departure to Reindeer & Sami Experiences 11.10am - 2.30pm

This is a unique and intriguing experience amid breathtaking scenery at Sorrisniva in the Alta valley. The Sami guides will guide you along through unforgettable events that highlight their past and present culture. You will meet reindeer, drive your own reindeer sled, and hear stories of the old days and the special singing that is a cornerstone of Sami culture. During the sled ride, you will warm up by the fire in a traditional Sami tent, or “lavvo”, and enjoy hot drinks and a snack. At 2.30pm a transfer back to Alta Hotel
