Old royalty and charm in Nyborg, the beautiful South Funen archipelago, maritime spirits and the city of fairytales, Odense.

Funen is a wonderful spot for a cycling holiday … the distances are short and both when you cycle along the coast, at the islands or inland at the green island Funen, you are surrounded by beautiful landscapes and friendly people.

Itinerary

Welcome to Funen and to old, historic Nyborg, where Danish kings preferred to stay here in the royal castle, which is the oldest one in the Nordic countries. For more than 400 years up to 1560 Nyborg was the capital and center of Denmark. Nowadays it’s a charming city where you can easily follow the trails and signs back in time.

Approx. 30-34 miles

Today you pass or visit castles and manor houses on your way to Svendborg. “Holckenhavn Slot” is just outside Nyborg at the beautiful Holckenhavn Fjord. The route goes partly through soft waving hills inland and along the coast with stunning views to the sea and the islands Thurø, Tåsinge and Langeland until you reach Svendborg.

Explore the islands Tåsinge, Langeland, Ærø, Drejø and/or Skarø. Half-timbered houses and romantic villa­ges and islands are forming the tour today no mat­ter which route you choose. Start by crossing the bridge “Svendborgsundbroen” to the island Tåsinge. Troense is one of the most beautiful shipping villa­ges in Denmark, and here you find also the castle “Valdemars Slot”. Continue to Rudkøbing where you can choose to explore Langeland. OR sail to the big, maritime island Ærø and then return directly to Svendborg. OR sail from Svendborg to the small islands Drejø and Skarø and enjoy limited biking (max. 15-20 kms) in fascinating nature and cosy small-island-atmosphere.

The Cycling Route no. 8 along the sea between Svendborg and Fåborg is the most idyllic one in whole Funen. It shows South Funen from its most beautiful side and offers splendid views of the archipelago. The gently undulating terrain leads you past manor houses and numerous romantic half-timbered houses and small villages.

Approx. 31 miles + train Odense - Nyborg

Outside Faaborg the “Svanninge Bakker” is a hilly, woody area called “The Funen Alps” (128 m). Enjoy the view ! At Brobyværk the first weapons factory in Denmark was established in 1648 and here the landscape changes character into a more even plain. You end in Odense – the capital of Funen and birth place of the world famous poet Hans Christian Andersen, whose fairytale spirit still reigns in the streets of his city.

The tour ends at arrival in Odense or Nyborg for the 5-days tour.

If you want to stay in Odense this is also possible either for an additional night or before continuing to Nyborg.

Approx. 20-30 miles

On this last day you cycle to Kerteminde, which is a very charming, old fishing town. Go under water at the maritime centre “Fjord & Bælt” or enjoy art at the “Johannes Larsen Museum“.

After Kerteminde you will ride along the coast to Nyborg. For a shorter route, you may skip Kerteminde and go directly across Funen from Odense to Nyborg. Alternatively you take the train directly from Odense back to Nyborg. We are happy to arrange additional nights if needed.
