Self Drive in Norway

10 Days / 11 locations in Norway

Itinerary

Day 1     Tromso
Accommodation: Thon Hotel Tromso

ARRIVAL TROMSØ

Arrival to the airport of Tromsø. Pick-up the rental car, and drive to the centre of the town. Get to know Tromsø, the principal city of Northern Norway and known as the Gateway to the Arctic because of the significance in Norwegian commercial history. There are plenty of museums focusing on regional art, Sami culture and history, and polar science. We recommend a short trip by cable car to Storsteinen Mountain, where you can enjoy the view of Tromsø and surroundings. Also worth a visit is the magnificent Arctic Cathedral, a masterpiece of modern architecture. Accommodation at the Thon Hotel Tromsø or similar

Day 2     Tromso - Harstad
Accommodation: Thon Hotel
Meals: Breakfast

TROMSØ – THE VESTERÅLEN ISLANDS – HARSTAD (305 KM)

After breakfast at the hotel, route along the shores of the Bals fjord and road E6 to the Vesterålen Islands. Possibility to take a smaller road and drive on the shores of the Asta Fjord. Arrival to Harstad, which is the capital of Vesterålen Islands, and a good base for exploring the archipelago. The city offers, apart from the surrounding nature, a wide range of cultural events like the North Norwegian Festival of Culture in June. Accommodation at the Thon Hotel Harstad or similar

Day 3     Harstad - Lofoten - Svolvaer
Accommodation: Best Western Hotell Lofoten
Meals: Breakfast

HARSTAD – THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS – SVOLVÆR (205 KM)

Enjoy your breakfast at the hotel before you continue to explore the Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands. At the Vesterålen Islands you can discover nature or participate in one of the several local festivals. Drive to Sortland and continue by ferry from Melbu to Fiskebøl before you arrive to the Lofoten Islands. The Lofoten Islands offer some of the most breath-taking scenery in the country. Here the towering, pointed mountain peaks rise majestically from the sea to a height of almost 1 000 meters; many of the island interiors are swathed in emerald green, and the shorelines are fringed with white sandy beaches. We recommend a visit to some of the charming villages, for instance Stamsund and Reine. Accommodation at Thon Hotel Lofoten or similar

Day 4     Svolvaer - Skutvik - Narvik
Accommodation: Quality Hotel Grand Royal
Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel and the possibility to explore more of the Lofoten Islands, before departure towards the mainland. Take a ferry from Svolvær to Skutvik, crossing the West Fjord (Vestfjorden), and continue by car to Bognes for another ferry cross Lysfjorden to Skarberget. Lysfjorden is the home of a big colony of killer whales while sea eagles rule Skarberget, a mountain diving directly into the sea, so with a little bit of luck this short cruise will show you a unique part of Norwegian nature. Drive to Narvik. Narvik lies on a peninsula between the Beisfjord and the Rombaksfjord, at the foot of the 1200 meter high Fagernes Mountain. We recommend the cable car up the mountain or a visit to the Ofoten Museum. Furthermore the region has a varied collection of 2nd World War memorials and museums.

We recommend a visit to the Museum of Reconstruction, which exhibits the culture in the Finnmark region and Troms before and after the Second World War. Visitors can walk in an authentic refugee cave, a barrack kitchen, and a post-war permanent house. Hammerfest, because of its geographical position, has had a strong relationship with arctic hunting and fishing for hundreds of years. The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society has as its main aim the preservation of this tradition. It actively collects and preserves artifacts of historical and scientific interest before all trace of them disappears. The society offers an exclusive membership to those who visit Hammerfest, the northernmost town in the world. Accommodation at the Thon Hotel Hammerfest or similar
